Every December we do an exhibition that brings awareness to disability and too International Day of Persons with Disabilities which is recognized around the world on December 3rd.
This year, in our window gallery at #100-938 Howe Street, we are presenting a series pf paintings by Sandra Yuen in an exhibition called Home.
In Sandra's own words:
For me, art began as a healing tool from mental illness but grew into a passion.
My house portraits are about isolation, memory and the erosion of society. My father was an architect who taught me aspects of design and perspective. Homes provide us with comfort and belonging but may also separate us from engagement. I am drawn to older homes built in the 1950-60s which are slowly being replaced by newer types of residences. Vancouver is the disappearing city—high rises and higher density. The lack of hope experienced through the pandemic still has an effect on me.
I grew up in Vancouver, so a lot of these homes have nostalgic value to me. Neighbourhoods have changed but there are still many Vancouver Specials around the city. I love to paint the shadows and effects of light. To draw the viewer into the space."
Sandra is a visual artist, musician and author of My Schizophrenic Life: The Road to Recovery from Mental Illness, Chop Shtick and From New York to Vancouver: Stories on the Fly with author James D Young. She is a drummer for Beautiful Losers, a duo band.
