Artists have been creating depictions of the Devil or Satan or Lucifer since the beginning of time. Not really, but our fascination with good and evil has. We dive into the subject this month with three artists sharing their perspectives on the subject. One from Canada and two from the United States.

Mary Patterson is a self-taught artist from Victoria, BC who is also a Le Cordon Bleu chef, and the author of the 2007 illustrated cookbook Special Cookbook.

"The devil has a rich history and existed for me as a child engaged in Anglicanism. Lucifer was a dark figure ready to dispense punishment to children at the first sign of disobedience. Contemporary Hollywood culture has produced films such as Rosemary’s Baby that provide us with images of the devil that reside in the subconscious long after the film is over. "

Andy Dykeman is a self-taught artist living in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. Andy's history includes being a

punk rock drummer, a forensic autopsy assistant, and now he's a practicing chiropractor. Most of Andy's work is created on a variety of found materials. The pieces in this exhibition are created on old x-ray envelopes. Chiropractor by day, artist by night.

Steve Moseley was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, USA. He is a self-taught artist that has a

bachelors in Chemistry and worked as a medical research technician for 10 years. After he married, and the birth of his first child, he chose to be a stay-at-home dad. To keep busy in his free time, he started making ships-in-the-bottle, but then taking the advice of a friend and bottle collector, he switched to making whimsey bottles and using his keen sense of humor to create art and sometimes push the boundaries of sex, politics and religion.

Steve’s art has been featured in internationally recognized outsider art magazine Raw Vision and has

shown his work at Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft in the US, The Intuit Gallery for Outsider Art in

Chicago, US; and at Galerie Art Cru in Berlin, Germany.

As outsiders to this land—the land of the xÊ·mÉ™θkÊ·É™y̓əm / Musqueam , Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw / Squamish,

and sÉ™lÌ“ilw̓ətaʔɬ / Tsleil-Waututh  Nations — we continue to acknowledge their stewardship of these lands

since time immemorial.

We acknowledge the colonial history that has devastated these lands and peoples,

and we are committed to learning from the past to help create a shared future of observation, reconciliation,

and understanding. As visitors to this land, our gallery is committed to supporting the development of local Indigenous peoples and communities.

In gratitude and with ever-evolving knowledge, we look forward to honest and open dialogue between Indigenous peoples and the outsiders who are here to create, learn, and prosper together.
